The beginning of the end

The beginning of the end
The beginning of the end -

the end is near I've been thinking about this topic for some time. In my head I have written and rewritten this post many times. I have to publish only away at the last minute to get back out. I hesitate not, because I did not know what to say, but because deep down I knew I was not ready to say it. But now that I give this post finally, I know it is to take time to publish.

In July I will celebrate in the street five years. One fateful day in 06, I hugged my parents farewell and started on a journey that has taken me around the world and a half times, I was able to teach in two different countries, playing poker professionally in Amsterdam, living in New York City , creating this amazing site, and meet some of the nicest people in the world.

But I have often wondered whether a person can go too long. Is there a time when we will be on the road overkill? My overall response is that you never get in your life too much travel. This is especially true if you are together with friends or someone to share the special moments. However, if you are traveling alone, as I believe the answer is yes, at some point, too much time on the road can take their toll.

Five years after I began traveling is still wonderful and amazing, but it is not the same. Some of the shine is gone. Yes, I meet great people, but every day, how often you can have the same: "Where are you from and what you do" conversation with other travelers? How often can you reinvent the wheel? How often can I start over? It is one thing to be traveling with friends, a girlfriend or a spouse, but it is to be surrounded another constantly by strangers every day of your life.

couple is a wonderful thing, and I am firmly convinced everyone it at least once in their lifetime should do, because it promotes great personal growth. I have learned so much about myself traveling on their own. But after so many years, it is finally worn on me. I have reached the point at which solo travel a lonely existence has become that I am not suitable for longer.

Last year I wrote about how I had lost my sense of wonder for the journey, and I needed a break. Life in New York City last summer gave me a much needed break, but it was also clear to me that I am missing on a lot when it comes to leading a sustainable lifestyle. I missed a fitness room, a kitchen, local waterholes, favorite restaurants, and a group of good friends to spend time with. I have the act of simply live somewhere. But whenever I thought about hiring, I started thinking about all the traveling to think I could take and the road ended inevitably calls me back.

However, when I left Central America, I realized that my days were numbered when not to go again, to go at the end of the trip I was excited somewhere but home to New York City. It's a feeling I have not had in a long time, and as I thought about a place when home for the first time in many years, I realized my time had finally come.

end of the day sunset in life My motto is to live without regret, and despite the train a new life calls me, I know that I will always have regrets when I do two last things: Southeast Asia for the last travel time and what you do last major tour of Europe, which eventually includes the eastern block. In my mind, these trips have to do as a whole, not as small trips in this or that country.

So I left home today for my last trip around the world that take me to Europe, East Asia and Southeast Asia before again sometime around March or April I Will 2012 Section in New York settle then? I dont know. Paris also sounds nice. Who can say what the future holds?

But I now know the top marks of the end. This is my last long-term travel. When this is done, I will have been to six years for a close up on the street. That is six years constantly on the move. Six years new beginnings. I have no regrets, but I'm ready, on the way to something new. I am prepared to be semi-nomadic. I am ready to be a place to make at home.

has

I do not know what keeps you in the next year, but I know it now holds more opportunities than in recent years always done. One thing that I envy is travelers many out that with a set of "end date" on their journey, they have an excitement about them that I've recently lacked. You must there "anything get in" before it is too late. Me? I make every day. Travel is my day to day life. And just like my friends in Boston who never went the freedom trail, or my friends in New York City who have never visited the Statue of Liberty, I have made the things because: "I can always do it later." Therefore I can not pack my days with as much stuff as I used to. I have become a bit lazy. But now there is no real "later" for me. That's it.

Well, I have a new sense of urgency in my travels. It's like I all recapture my first trip repeatedly. Because with the end in view, I have them all in before it is too late. There is no time to lose, do not spend days behind the computer, no more "I'll get back." No, these nomadic journeys ended. Tourism will always be a part of my life, but desired life changes and I have to change with it. It's a brave new world again.

friend overseas I sat down on my journey regrets writing and realized I only have one. I've never studied abroad, when I was in college

Studying abroad is the annual ritual for thousands of students. You travel around the world to get away from home to experience something new, the classes take place overseas, meet new people and party in foreign countries. Most American students seem to flow toward Europe, where cheap transportation just makes weekend trips to exotic cities.

When I was in college, I never began to study abroad error. At this point in my life, I was not big in travel. Studying abroad sounded cool, but it sounded like an annoying administrative process - and I was lazy. I liked my life on campus; It was easy. Forms and papers got in the way sleep late, four-day weekends and fraternity events.

But what kept me really was again one idea that seems to keep most of the others back. It is the belief that something might be overlooked while studying abroad. What would happen if I left home? What changes would happen to my friends? Which parties I'd missed? What gossip? What if there was at school some big event and I was not there? What if the President came? What if this ? What if that ?

With all those "what ifs" in my mind, I never went abroad because I never wanted to miss anything. I did not know what the "something" was, but I knew I would not miss it. But I was naive in thinking this. I never thought that would study abroad mean new memories, new friends and new adventures. I was too attached to the fear in my mind, to let me go.

flash drive forward to 06 when I went with my friend Mike. We discussed how I was going to leave for my round the world trip.

"I wonder what will look like life, when I come back?" I asked him.

"Nothing will change," he said. "It will be exactly the same as if you to the left."

"How come? I'll be gone for a year!" I gave back. "A year is a long time. Something is happen."

"Matt," he said to me, "when I went to England to study abroad, I thought the same. But when I came back, were all still doing the same thing, the same thing to study, act in the same way. It was as if I had never left. I melted right back in. It is the same for you be. "

At the end Mike was right. I came back 18 months later and life was still the same. My friends had the same jobs, had the same hobbies, and went to the same bars. I had not missed any world-shaking events. Life was in exactly the same way it went in my absence ever had. In a way, it felt as if they had 18 months is never really happened. My old life was as if time had stood still, waiting for my return.

And it was then that I realized I had never made a big mistake, to study abroad.

I missed out on an opportunity that comes along only once in your life. The semester abroad was put to me by my own unfounded fears. Now I regret, hold that I let myself worry about life experience overseas. Who knows what kinds of experiences I could have had to study abroad, what friends I had made, or how my impression of travel might be different, I started at a younger age. I took my chance because I was too scared to leave my comfort zone.

I know that many college students read my blog. I know because I receive emails from students all the time. This post is available for all students who are afraid to take a chance.

To you, I say study, go abroad! Do not worry about what you might miss at home again. Your friends are still your friends, the parties will still be there, and campus life will not change. You do not need to be at home, to learn all the juicy gossip. You can do that on Facebook. Do the Foo Fighters for a concert coming Compare explore the gelato restaurants in Florence? Would you weekends at the beach in Australia trade just so you can find out there that a friend made a fool of himself at a party?

I know from experience that you are missing out more go by staying on campus as overseas. This is your chance to live abroad and most of your expenses paid for you. This is your chance to see if you like the world outside your borders in relative comfort and safety.

Do not be nervous. Do not let that fear hold you back. You are still in school safety be bubble ... just at a different school. There are many other students as nervous as you well. It will be to connect something over. In addition, if you really do not like it, you can always come home

But do not be like me - be .. With a lifetime of regret filled just because you too much anxiety, were what would can

Forty eight hours in Oslo

Forty eight hours in Oslo
Forty eight hours in Oslo -

skip Most budget travelers Norway, it is be-cause to visit an expensive country. Taxes are high, a lot of things, imported, and the currency is very strong. During my time here I have very few opportunities to find this fact and have learned to "cheap" can be a very relative term. However, flights may allow for a brief stopover in this incredibly beautiful city. And while Oslo is not cheap, you can two days here spend a lot to do, without breaking your budget:

Day 1
Vigeland Park and Frogner

Because most museums do not open until 10 am, spend the morning to the city on foot. A good walk is to go to Vigeland Park, overlooking the statues, and walk through the Frogner neighborhood, which is home to some very nice buildings. down on Bygdøy Island, where you can see the city's museums find head.

Viking Museum

Located on Bygdøy Island, this museum is home to Viking Longships in tombs in Norway found. Besides two dating back 1100 years Viking ships (apparently the best preserved in the world), there are three other ships and many Infor-mation about life during the Viking Age. There is also a Viking grave chamber with skeletons.

Folk Museum

In addition to the Viking Museum is a large open-air recreation of traditional Norwegian buildings from different periods through-out in Norwegian history. The most famous building is the intricately carved church.

Fram Museum

This museum has the Fram, the first ice-breaking ship in the world and the last wooden. The Fram made many trips to the North and South Poles, and the exhibition is very detailed and rich history and offers as well as photographs

Kon-Tiki Museum -. Located next to the Fram, this museum has famous historian and explorer Thor Heyerdahl-Dahls balsa rafts, he sailed across the Atlantic and Pacific. Goal has shown that, for the ancient cultures was possible, their own technology to have traveled on the great oceans. His travels offered important insights into historical migra theories

The Holocaust Center -. The Holocaust Centre is the former residence of the Norwegian Nazi collaborator and nationalist leader, Vidkun Quisling. The center focuses on the Holocaust, the fate of the Norwegian Jews, and the persecu-tion of religious minorities throughout the world.

City Hall

How do you take the boat back over the harbor, you will come to the town hall. The hall is to provide accessible and free to the public. It is open late, so make this your last stop will make sure that you have enough time to visit all the museums. The main ballroom, where the Nobel Peace Prize is given, and there is an excellent wall Norway struggle for freedom on the opposite wall symbolizes.

Day 2
Castle Akershus

Akershus Castle is a medieval fortress dating from 0, although it greatly over the years has changed, especially when Danish King Christian IV turned into a Renaissance palace. The grounds of the castle are open 6:00 to 9:00 and offer excellent views of the city and the fjord. The castle itself is open 10:00 to 04:00. The interior is not Versailles, but the audio tour provides a detailed history of the castle and Norway

Resistance Museum -. The grounds of the castle houses the Museum chronicles Norway opposition to the museum shows Norwegian military history from Viking times time ~~ POS = HEADCOMP until the 1950s also within the castle walls, - Nazis in World War II and the subsequent prosecution of Nazi collaborators

Armed Forces Museum
.. it is not great, but since you're here and it comes in your Oslo pass is included, it is worth to spend-ing a few minutes.

Harbor Cruise

Oslofjord is spectacular, reminds me on the Puget Sound in Seattle, but with more islands. There are a few ways to see the fjord: the hop-on-and-off-boat, the people from the various attractions and museums or an appropriate two-hour drive oscillates through the fjord. I recommend the two-hour drive, as it goes deeper into the harbor and you can see much more.

The Royal Palace and Park

The center of the park is the Royal Palace, where you can watch the changing of the guards in the morning. Its central loca-tion means you will probably go through a couple of times. It is very large with plenty of open space and trails. In warm weather, the park is filled with locals enjoying what little sun, they get all year round. I found it a great place to people watch. During the summer months, parts of the palace are open to the public

National Gallery -. Near the palace, the National Gallery contains the famous painting The Scream, which was still famous as it stolen a few years ago. The museum is small (only a great floor), but there are on display many Scandinavians artist. You will also find some Impressionists and Dutch works. The museum is open until 17.00, so it is best to do this last.

There are a lot of attractions are involved, it is best to visit Oslo to obtain tourist card, while you are here. The card costs 340 NOK ($ 70 USD), but includes free transportation, admission to museums and discounts on the harbor cruise. It is the most economical way to see everything. To save money on food, the most sensible thing to do is to simply cook your own meals or eat the prepackaged meals 7-11. (Seriously, they are not so bad.) Any good restaurant that you go to call set back at least USD $ 50. After all, this is a country where a meal costs $ 15 USD McDonalds. The food is not cheap.

During Oslo has more attractions and activities, two days is manageable enough to get a feel for the city, learn the history, and spend a lot of money. If you can afford it, I recommend at least a day, but for those on a tight budget, two days is fine to get an overview of Oslo.

Editor's note Visit Oslo provided me with free accommodation and a tourist card to enter at-tractions for free while I was there

find Lifelong friendships -

friends in paris black and white I did not Paul and Jane not seen in more than four years.

The three of us met on the island of Ko Lipe in Thailand in 06 - a place we loved so much, we were in the month. The three of us were close friends at this time. At the end of it, as if we had known each other for years was. But have expired with my visa, I had to go. But when I left the island, Paul and Jane took me to visit them in New Zealand promise. It was something I could easily do.

Four years later, I finally arrived in New Zealand. Despite the amount of time that had passed, when I saw her, it was as if it had not been a time between us. All jokes and mutual understanding, which we had on Lipe had made still there.

I often feel that the "rawness" of travel to instant friends can cause a lifetime. You meet someone once and in a moment, feel like you've known them for years. As fellow travelers we already have common bonds that make between us friendship likely. That does not mean that we all become best friends, of course, but I think traveling away all our luggage and our history that we carry around frequently.

My travels around the world have made me many close and lifelong friends. The people of La Tomatina. Friends of Ios. Friends like Paul and Jane. Friends from my time in Bangkok. Friends I not seen for years, but to send me invitations to her wedding.

group dinner in ko lipe

and friends as Erik and Anne. I met her while I we had in Bruges in 09 for a few days of beer taste good Belgium and hit it off so well that we ended up going together for a week to Amsterdam. I saw them a few months later, when I stopped in Copenhagen, but not seen since then still talked a lot with them. We have caught us in our lives.

But now I am leaving Copenhagen after they have just the last 5 days with them. As with Paul and Jane, it was as if Erik, Anne and I had never been apart. Before the conversation flowed as easily and quickly as in 09. We caught doing again right as if time our friendship was frozen as well as two years.

I do not know how many people I've met in the last five years of travel. to guess to countless to begin. As you meet so many people on the street, it's hard to keep up with all of them, to get away, especially the further you on your journey. Even with the best intentions, messages may fade as separate lives begin to be performed.

group dinner in ko lipe

But sometimes you meet a Paul and Jane. Or Erik and Anne. Or a Joel. Or a mate. Or a Nick. Or countless others. And it does not matter how long it's been since the last time she was seen. Time can not just break that bond you have. It can take months or years, but whenever it is that you pick up where you left off.

And that is the greatest gift that I think travel to us are.

Becoming a backpacker All Over Again

Becoming a backpacker All Over Again
Becoming a backpacker All Over Again -

backpacking nomadicmatt Despite my low-budget hostel travel, it is for a long time that I really felt like a backpacker. Sure, I travel like a (most of the time). I stay in hostels. I eat cheap. I'm backpacker style tours. I hang with other backpackers. But I have not felt as a backpacker in a long time.

In part it's because I travel not do like other travelers on a budget. I have a job and can have a bit more free spending my money. I eat more frequently made to nicer places. I do not always stay in dorms. I take more trips. I stay sometimes in hotels. I do not have to travel as a budget backpacker, because I do not a budget for my trip. When I travel on a budget, it is because I want to. I do not like luxury travel. I think it's a waste of money on a fancy room to spend only seen for a few hours.

And unlike the backpacker with I hang in hostels, I have to take care of responsibilities and deadlines. I have to operate this website. I have to write stories. I have to answer emails and questions to answer. I can not just wake up and do nothing.

I often the other travelers I envy their ability to fulfill to be so careless.

I promised at the beginning of this year that I would spend less time working and more time traveling. I have restricted a number of side projects, I asked a few people to help me, and I outsourced more work. And yet, I have not yet feel completely carefree.

not, at least until last week.

The loss of my passport took me a lot of problems, but it kept me in Amsterdam stuck, a city that I go for a more "vacation." It's a place I hardly do any work. And a long time spend with the same people in the same hostel I've learned to relax. I kept the computer closed and did very little work. And the world did not end, as I slowed down.

And although it took some time to "relax", by the time I flew to Greece last week, I was feeling back to my old self. Back to unburdened, carefree travelers. The one that went traveling in 06, do not work. It felt good to just hang out and be easy.

happy just in new zealand Often blogging feels like a huge albatross around my neck. On the one hand I really love what I do, and I especially love that I e-mails from people who tell me my website to it has helped to travel or be inspired to travel. I love to share what I love. I love to help others. I love people from this site. (case :. I am currently in Ios with two readers who happens to be the same time as I did in Athens) For all these reasons and more, I would never give up or change the Site, what I do ,

But on the other hand, sometimes I hate what I'm doing. I take no press trips so much, I do not go to many conferences, and I do not know much of "business networking things" make, because I just want to travel. I like to do my own thing. This site was built in part to help me easily find a way to travel more. That's really all I want. I do this because it is something I can do from anywhere in the world. But some days I look at my computer and want to throw them out the window, nuke my side, and run to the next stop on my travel list from. I do not want to worry about the mail that needs to be written, or the emails that need to be answered.

My life is a constant train between these two emotions. And it is often why I never tell people what I do. I'm not ashamed of it. But at the end of the day, I want to be just another traveler. I dislike the comments and questions, to say the people who come, what I'm doing. We end up talking and how horny my work for 15 minutes, and from then on, I am the travel writers, not the traveler. I am very grateful for the chance to have the life that I lead. I am very happy. But I hate to talk about me, and I hate talking about my "work." And sometimes I feel like this "job" creates a wall between me and a carefree existence.

Which brings me back to Amsterdam.

In Amsterdam my computer was shut down. In Amsterdam I was only the traveler for many days. I avoided the "what you do back home?" How often I could, but finally, I let spill it easy. However, I had the answer in a way I had not before. I said what I've done, I've answered a few questions and then I just moved on. are not allowed by the call down 20 minutes about how awesome of a job I did, I could not build it.

Thereafter, I was just a backpackers with a really cool blog.

I often say that the tasks that are keeping us from the street illusory. Once we put it down, they're gone. Your bills, job, car and home are gone once you simply press the way out. In Amsterdam, I put my own burden down. In my head I had this job, which to be held me by a careless traveler. It stopped me that the traveler will I - the one who enjoys watching at the moment, not worrying about email. But it was all in my head. The only thing that keeps me I was not back some illusory responsibility. By owning my burden, I published it. I thought it even let me down. I think it made me hold back.

And so I have the backpacker was back I always wanted to be.

about 110 km outside Sofia, Bulgaria is the Rila Monastery. It was the highlight of my trip to Sofia and made an otherwise boring visit quite exciting. The monastery was founded by the hermit St. Ivan of Rila and was built by his students while he lived in a cave.

The original was destroyed in the 14th century to the present site Rila Monastery, but rebuilt. The oldest buildings are the tower of Hrelyu (1334) and a small church right next to it (1343). Most of the monastery was destroyed in 1833 by fire and rebuilt between 1834 and 1862. It is a nice place. Take a look:

The couple from Positive World Travel hugging on a boat This is a guest post by Ant, one half Positive World Travel.

if the world traveling as a couple, there may come a time when that loses some of its brightness your relationship "sparks". While new cultures to explore and race around the world, it is easy to stay for your relationship to the distance or end in a rut.

I speak from experience. Our relationship has become boring and banal a few times, but we have found many ways to keep the flame on fire and over again. The important thing is to try and keep your relationship fresh and exciting as the countries that you visit

Elise and I have many ways to find our relationship interesting .:

[1945006DateNight]
as cheesy as it may sound, going on an actual "date", they can do wonders for your relationship. It can monotonous to eat Sightseeing, cheap meals, or your own food day in and day out cooking make, so time for a special night can be something to look forward to. Elise and I'm planning a date night every two weeks. We spend a little more money, go to a nice restaurant, and dress up as best we can. We do not spend the night on our website or speak what we did on this day, but each put our dream caps on, and play the "what if" game to talk.

Elise loves about our further chat wedding and although it can drive me crazy at times (I never knew you could talk so much about flower arrangements!), Date nights a great way about her-err share and chat, I mean our dream wedding time ~~ POS = HEADCOMP. Date nights you can listen to and with each other again outside the travel experience.

Be can spontaneously
traveling as a couple take its toll on each of you, and this peak is our most important ingredients for success. Elise may be our trips planned something and I try and mix things up and be spontaneous, what their thinking holds, because they do not know what I have planned next.

If you. Additional time in the city you are in, head out for the day and only act on a whim Do activities that you had not previously considered, and try romantic dates such as massages go to see a movie or go bowling. Traveling does not always have attractions, and you can have time to do the normal things you spend again was at home, also.

Fixed
celebrating a birthday while traveling
Even during the trip is for any relationship to celebrate important birthdays and anniversaries. It does not matter whether you are in the middle of nowhere, because the fact is that you'll go on a little extra effort, and the work is always to make your partner happy.

Once when we camped, it was Elise's birthday and we were far from any nice restaurants. So, on the morning of her birthday, I woke up early on 23 balloons to blow up, and then all over our tent gently put it. I woke her up an out-of-tune singing birthday candle and a dry piece of cake I was in a shop on the corner found before the date. She was glad that I bother her birthday special had gone a little, although we camped. We spent the rest of the day on a deserted beach, and Elise says that it was one of her best birthdays ever.

Surprises
Even if you are traveling together, and you can on a limited budget, a surprise will excite every now and then getting your significant other. Elise knows that I'm a sucker for dark chocolate, and I always get excited when she has to do some errands and jumping on the bed with both hands behind his back when she gets home. I love that she thinks of me while she's out. It brings joy to our relationship.

Face Your Fears
Doing activities that have one or both of you have a fear of, you can bring together and bond you share. Sharing a fear and overcoming it will definitely bring back the spark and a sense of achievement for both of you.

Elise has a little afraid of heights, and it has regularly pushed this fear in the last 18 months to confront. She jumped out of airplanes and jumped cliffs in fast flowing rivers from. Every time they do I get this fear faces so proud of her and it deepened my love for her.

support your partner and give them the encouragement they need to keep their fears to face or together is an instant bonding moment overcoming shared between the two of you and only strengthens your relationship.

It is not about travel, is about freedom

It is not about travel, is about freedom
It is not about travel, is about freedom -

writing my name on the Tropic of Capricorn sign while standing on a bus I am a very lazy person. I am also a very indecisive person. This combination usually means that I do at the last minute everything at the end. And then I switch usually these last minute plans, because I suddenly get better, brighter idea in my head. As a result, I always end up paying a lot of money in airline cancellation fee when I change my flights around. But I guess that's the price I pay to do forever, what I want, when I want.

As such, originally I wanted to visit this amazing monasteries in Romania before going to Moldova. After I'd fly to Ukraine, where after I'd ... well, I did not know where I went afterwards. I can not plan so far in advance.

But when two weeks ago I have in Sighisoara, Romania sick (birthplace of Dracula, but not cheesy tourist traps Dracula), I was undecided and changed my travel plans. I loved Romania, and it far exceeded all my expectations. However, I spent much time in the small, quiet country towns, as beautiful as they were, but got a bit boring to see. And knowing I was going off alone to the monasteries and Moldova, I realized I wanted more "excitement" in my life. I wanted a livelier scene. So I changed my plans. I skipped Moldova (see ya next year!) And flew to Ukraine, then to Finland, where I am now. Tomorrow I will take the boat to Estonia for a few days.

After that I returned to Boston. No, I'm not finished my journey. It's only for two weeks. My parents' house will be a great place to start my book, I have a free flight there due to an unused ticket, and I got a free trip to Mexico. All great reasons to take a short break of Europe, although I will return next month for the Oktoberfest and to see Central Europe.

I'm all over the place, and I love it. In times like this, I really appreciate my lifestyle. But not because I travel. I like it because I have complete freedom.

I remember me grow up and to always want to be "the captain of my ship." You know, to work, because you like what you do, not because you need a paycheck, be able to jet off to a location you want when you want, has a high degree of flexibility, time and freedom for all. But then you graduate college with debt, you start working, the responsibilities pile on, you begin to plan their lives, there are the social expectations to make, and before you know it, you're stuck. They are part of this vicious treadmill, and it seems like the time never your own.

Then, one day, you just think, "How did things this way I want out of this box?."

And so I quit my job and went traveling. Although the jump was the hardest part, you realize anything is easy, and it's not that Travel pulls in, it is the freedom and flexibility. It's about to wake up today and say, "I'm going to Ukraine tomorrow." Or are you going to play golf. Or maybe take guitar lessons. Or start that the bakery you always wanted. Or to Thailand move teaching yoga.

I think the subject came to me recently because I have to think about the last five years of traveling and a lot of reflecting. It is so easy to get caught up in the rat race. Do what you are "supposed" to do, because that's how you are told that life is to be lived. You get a job, a wife, a home, children, and then retire. But wake up one day, and you are 30 or 40 or 50, and you realize you never have a lot of things, you really wanted do. Maybe it's why so many people have a midlife crisis. Maybe that's why he would my father decided again to take on motorcycles. Or why he bought the car he always wanted. Or why my friend's mother changed career.

I think that feeling is what causes so many people travel to rotate. Yes, it's great to see the world, but most travelers I speak are really pointed to the sense of freedom and adventure, the endless possibility. While you are traveling, seem endless to keep potential and the possibility of the day. It's why even long-term travelers have a hard time setting again believe in I, "the real world". Once you were out of the box, it's hard to go back.

As much as I travel to discover new places and learn about the people I live my life, because I wake up every day, I know I can open the door and do something I want. For now is traveling. Exploring my world. Maybe a few years it will be different.

But no matter what I do or where I go, I'll never really change how I live, because I will not give my freedom to do whatever it is that makes me happy at all time I want.

The Utterly Amazing Ukraine

The Utterly Amazing Ukraine
The Utterly Amazing Ukraine -

A statue of famous Ukranian writer in Lviv A native English speaker, I hit the jackpot driving. Wherever I go in the world, I never have a problem communicating with people. English is the lingua franca of the world, and if anything is always in a second language, it is always English. In hostels, people from around the world to chat with each other in English, that means that I join always find a conversation. I've never limited by language.

And even if people are not fluent English, they are most likely to know enough to order water for me to find the bill or the way to the station without problems. While there were times in which I have ever had with non-verbal communication, to be creative, for the most part, communication is much easier than English-speakers for me, as there. For my friends from Germany or Portugal

At least until I went and visited this month Ukraine.

of all the countries I have visited, Ukraine ranked number one on the list of places where no one seems to speak English.

It may sound like an exaggeration to say. Sure some people have to speak a little English, right? Some do. Those who can interact with tourists or working at restaurants, to understand a few words. But every day Ukrainians? The ones I could not even met as understand the words "water", "train", "bill" or "thank you."

”Girl

Well, I'm not asked my language one of those tourists who know the locals. I expect someone in English not to be truly fluent, like someone from another location would not expect me to be fluent in their language. But given how pervasive is English around the world, most people in the big cities can say something . So I am always surprised and intrigued when people do not speak English.

One night, I was a good Ukrainian restaurant recommended by my hostel owner in Kiev, and I asked the man if they speak English there. His answer? "You're in Ukraine, man. No one speaks English here."

But you know what? The lack of English did not turn me from Ukraine.

In fact, with an incomprehensible script (Cyrillic) and no one faced to speak English with, I was really thrilled by Ukraine. While it was almost impossible to get around and to ask for help, I saw as a challenge. I spent 20 minutes at a train schedule gazing to find out which train was mine. I have creative when they try to talk to people. I showed a lot of things that I wanted.

”Statue

I loved the challenge. Although I was only there for a week, I think that's why I loved Ukraine so much. It was a challenge to travel. It was an adventure. And for me, the greater the adventure and the greater the challenge, the more I feel like I'm traveling to discover and learn about the world.

travel these days can be as simple, especially if you 're fluent in English. We are native really luckily, and it takes some of the challenge of the trip. But here I was dropped in a really strange place. I had "choo-choo" to a station, write numbers down to total his prices to pantomime, and very confused.

But Ukraine had much more to offer than just a language barrier. I only saw Lviv and Kiev, but they were very interesting cities (Lviv I liked more because of its old historic center). It was this mix of modern, old Soviet architecture and beautiful parks. If I can say something about the Communists, it is that they love to make real parks is. Small babushka grandmother walked beside girl wearing Prada. The Russian Orthodox churches contaminate the land, with its with its gilding and cone tops were both opulent and symbolic of a deep sense of faith. And I really loved Ukrainian food. I was surprised, was as flavorful. I had expected a hearty, mild cuisine of meat and potatoes. But the borscht, potato dumplings, the blintzes, the meat - it was all delicious. I especially liked the borscht. The sour cream adds they give a wonderful texture to the soup in it. (For cheap and good Ukrainian food, eating at Puzata Khata with locations across the country.)

Large statue in the middle of Kiev on a cloudy day

While I was in Kiev, I met with a bunch of couch surfers took me to a Ukrainian university party. Unlike my CouchSurfer guide and one of her friends, no one spoke enough English to talk to. It was involved in a lot of definition. And a lot of vodka toasts. Ukrainians love their vodka. I think to avoid awkward silence, roasted just to make things caused by the language barrier. We pushed too much in fact, and if I start to slow down, she laughed and tried to feed more vodka. I can think of vodka and a Ukrainian.

The gorgeous rooftops of Saint Sophia church in Kiev, Ukraine

The next year, the European football championship in Ukraine takes place, and I'll try not to keep visiting. It is a great reason to go back to a country I never would be so amazing and exciting to expect. I've barely scratched the surface of this vast country, do give me a lot of new things when I get there again. One week was not even to be close enough. I want to go mainly to Odessa to visit the east near Russia, and the head in the Crimea.

But given the language barrier, I think I might first have to learn some Ukrainian phrases.

"Na Zdorovye" ( "cheers") is me only get so far.

The Mayan ruins of Tulum

The Mayan ruins of Tulum
The Mayan ruins of Tulum -

While I was last week in Mexico, I had the chance to visit Tulum. Tulum is an ancient Mayan city located on the beach. In fact, a popular thing to do here after a sweat from running around working up is to go swimming in the sea. There is nothing in the shade of some ruins swim, right?

Tulum was a flourishing capital and commercial city until the Spaniards came and destroyed it in 1518. It was then left town and abandoned in the jungle. Well, it is one of the most popular and largest Mayan ruins in Mexico. It is incredibly beautiful, especially given its location near the sea. This is one of those places where my words could never do justice, so I'll take my pictures speak for me blank:

Costs for travel Far Eastern Europe

Costs for travel Far Eastern Europe
Costs for travel Far Eastern Europe -

Photo of a gorgeous statue in Ukraine In the summer I left the popular European hiking trail and saw three of Europe's less-visited countries: Bulgaria, Romania and Ukraine. They are located on Europe's far eastern edge and see few tourists. While Bulgaria sees a few tourists due to its proximity to the Balkans and serves as a stopover on the overland route from Turkey to Budapest, I went further north, the less I saw travelers. In Ukraine, I met volunteer US Peace Corps only a handful of Europeans

I do not understand why -. These countries are inexpensive and safe, and they lack the overwhelming masses you elsewhere in Europe. These countries are half the price of their Western counterparts. In fact, during my 46 days in these three countries, I spent a total of $ 1,876.50 USD. And that was even considering all that I splurged on sushi! That's a lot for 46 days in Europe.

While I normally the cost of each country would collapse into a single post, I want together to put these countries, so that you at once. How affordable can see this area of Europe

The cost of Bulgaria

A gorgeous view of nature and a beautiful building in Bulgaria
While in Bulgaria, I spent a total of 1,405.40 lev (BGL) in 23 days. The works to be USD to about $ 1000, or USD $ 43.47 per day at today's exchange rate. In the 23 days that I was there, I visited all the major destinations, including expensive and way overrated sun beach.

How do I spent my money
All prices are in Bulgarian leva

food :. 475.0 (cheap local meals, a couple of restaurants and a lot of sushi)
Accommodation: 445.70 (I in dormitories and Couchsurfed for five nights)
alcohol: 259.40 (I partied pretty strong, especially along the Black sea)
buses: 100
taxis. 19 (a few intra-city and airport taxis)
Tours / Sightseeing: 53
Movies: 42.5
water: 8.9
chess in the park: 1

How much you can do, it's really for
about the same. Without my sushi splurge, would have been my daily average of approximately USD $ 38.29. I spend not really do wasteful in Bulgaria or something about what would do the normal budget travelers. I used the transport, ate local food, stayed in cheap hotels. If you are not a sushi fan, budgeting USD $ 35-40 per day in Bulgaria should be sufficient.

If you are looking for more beautiful accommodations and restaurant meals, you should budgeting $ 50-55 USD per day look. And while these are not the lowest prices you can find in other parts of the world, when they compare prices in Western Europe or Scandinavia, things are much cheaper.

How to save money in Bulgaria
if you want to save even more money in Bulgaria, here are a few ways to reduce your costs:

CouchSurfing - Hostels are cheap, but if you want to save even more money accommodation, you can stay for free CouchSurfing and with the locals. There are a lot of available hosts in this country

Koch -. There are a lot of cheap Bulgarian food, especially the pizza, hot dogs and sandwiches on the street. will cook your own food, of course cheaper to do things, especially as the markets a wide range of inexpensive fruits and vegetables have

in Hostel Mostel remain -. Book this Hostel accommodation, you can reduce your costs, because not only do they offer a free breakfast, but they also provide free dinner (which also comes with a free beer). Staying here you get two meals a day. They have offices in Sofia, Plovdiv and Velinko Tarnovo

Take buses - .. Trains in Bulgaria are more expensive than buses

The cost of Romania

Photo of the old town of Brasov, Romania
While in Romania, I spent 1878.30 leu (RON) or $ 578.83 USD in the 16 days that I was there. This works per day 117.38 lei or $ 36.17 US dollars. This included the cost of travel from Bucharest by Bra? Ov and Transylvania Cluj-Napoca.

How do I spent my money
All prices are in Romanian Leu.

Food: 724.4 (sushi meals, nice restaurants, and for three days cooking)
property (in a private room dorms and two nights)
Alcohol 881: 9
transport: 113.9 (buses and taxis to the airport)
tours / Sightseeing: 80 (Bran Castle, a few museums, and walking tours)
cold medicine: 57
water: 13

How much can you do it right?

You can Romania do cheaper than me. I have quite a lot of sushi and had a couple of nights in a private room. Also, I got a cold and had to spend some money on medicine that increased my budget. USD $ 30 per day is a reasonable backpacker budget for Romania, although you will spend probably more when you drink.

If you only want a couple of nights in a private room, nice meals, and more pages, your budget probably come close to $ USD 45 per day. If you stay in private rooms only , then just three times the amount of money I spent on accommodation and that is how much you need for a place to stay budget.

How to save you money in Romania
I do not find that Romania offered amazing opportunities to save. It was not really one thing that I found and was like, "Wow! This is great! My budget is saved!" Outside normal CouchSurfing / cooking / eating local advice, the country is cheap enough.

The costs of the Ukraine

The very important landmark: Saint Sophia Church in Kiev, Ukraine
My last stop in the region was the Ukraine. While I was in the Ukraine, I spent a total of 2377.95 Ukrainian hryvnia (UAH) or $ 297.07 USD in the last seven days, I visited the country. This works a 339.70 hryvnia or USD $ 42.52 per day. I was in Kiev and Lviv, while I was there.

How do I spent my money
All prices are in Ukrainian hryvnia.

Accommodation: 740 (I have in dormitories for 100-110 hryvnia per night)
Food: 1122.50 (mostly local Ukrainian restaurants and two failed Sushi Dinner)
alcohol: 261 (two nights in Kiev) [1945007Transport]: 219.20
Tours / Sightseeing: 10
water: 15:25
Chess: 10 (.. I paid in chess in the park to lose There has fun made)

How much can you do it right?

One of the reasons for Ukraine my budget was so high was because I went twice for sushi. If you exclude these meals out of my budget, my daily average drops to 251 hryvnia or $ 31.09 USD. I do not think you Ukraine for much cheaper than to visit. I was the ultimate backpackers here and put everything cheap.

But I suggest you spend more and not be so efficient. Splurge on sushi or drinks or a nice room so many times each. This land is cheap (the cheapest I in Europe have, in fact). Acting out. Enjoy it, because after the football championship comes here next year, prices will certainly rise. Ukraine is currently one of the best price-countries in Europe. Make the most of it while you can

How to save you money in Ukraine
If you really feel the need to spend less money in Ukraine, you can can do three things .:

CouchSurfing - If 5-10 euros per night is too much for you, then CouchSurfing and save money

head of Kiev -. The country is considerably cheaper outside of Kiev, as well as ever closer to Russia. (. Note: From avoid immediate eastern Ukraine and Crimea )

Eat local - with only in local restaurants like Puzata Khata eat, you are your food prices keep as low as you can , A typical meal here costs me about 30 hryvnia ($ 4 USD)

Drinking -. This tip applies actually mentioned here for all countries. In all these countries, you can buy 2.5-liter bottles of beer in supermarkets and corner shops for $ 02.01 USD. It is incredibly good value and is the way to celebrate on the cheap.

****

The eastern part of Europe is the best bargains can be found on the continent. These three countries were much more favorable than I had previously thought, and traveling here definitely helped me to correct some of the overspending and higher costs for Western Europe. But beyond just the monetary savings, these countries are rich in history and good food, and they provide a challenge for those travelers who are not, on the well worn track in other parts of Europe. I'm so happy, did finally here, from

. Note: I do not visited Moldova for reasons of time, but I have heard its prices are on par with the rest of the region. I have, because it does not cost either to Belarus a few hundred dollars for a visa, and I did not feel like I was going to spend enough time to justify the cost.
